The Big Question for Any Relationship

I've got one big question. It's a question that will make everything in your relationship completely worthwhile... even the bits that get on your nerves and cause you head and heart aches...

It's the type of question you wouldn't ordinarily ask - but that's okay, because you didn't know to ask it... until now!

For most people, relationships don't go smoothly. Undercurrents, disputes, emotions, periods, children, habits, morals, values, work hours and workloads, these are just a few of the kind of things that can cause conflicts. But what if I told you something...

What if I told you it's not about the issue?

My philosophy is that no issue is bigger than the relationship. If we're honest it's never really the issue that causes the problem. What causes the problem is the emotions behind the issue.

And what causes the emotions?

What causes the our relationship conflicts is, at the core, very rarely the issue that's in front of us now. This may seem hard to take at first so let me explain a little more.

When we react to something someone says or does we are in effect re-acting - behaving in way we acted before. This is what we might call learned behaviour. We may have learned that behaviour in a number of ways: watching our parents behaviour in a relationship, seeing it on TV, our own experience etc.

Are these learned re-actions appropriate in all circumstances?

I'd say no. A few days ago my partner made a sweeping statement that... well... to be frank, pushed all my buttons. What she said was like a red rag to a bull. Thankfully I caught myself before any real damage was done. I immediately knew there was nothing wrong with what she had said, or how she had said it. But the words she used, reminded me of someone else and a pattern of behaviour I ran with them. This is the type of conditioned, unconscious, response I'm talking about.

If your partner presses your buttons does it mean the relationship bad?

Conflict doesn't have to mean the relationship is bad. It can indicate that you, or your partner, or most probably both of you, on occasions, have some things that you need to become more aware of. If you can begin to view your relationship as a playground to work these things out, the relationship can become a whole new arena of fun and games. And this is where my question can really help...

My question will get you thinking about the how you can help yourself and your relationship become a harmonious haven rather than a gladiator's ring. It will help you be a more understanding person for your partner and it will help to spare you from saying things you'll regret later.

The question is profoundly simple. But when you ask it and use the outcome effectively you begin to take your relationship onto a new level. Things that used to cause you problems will vanish. And when new things come up they'll have very little power.

When you find your buttons have been pushed the question you have to ask is this: What's this really about?

Simple isn't it. But it takes you right to the heart of the matter. As I said, relationship conflict is rarely about an issue and more to do with the conditioned responses.

By asking my question what you do is take the conditioned behaviour and transform it into the conscious. In effect what begins to happen is this: you move beyond the past conditioned response that causes conflict and are left with the current issue. This question allows you to understand what's going on inside you. Knowing this means you can then bypass the past and deal with what is currently before you.

But what if you don't want to move beyond the past?

Then I guess you'll continue to re-act it out... until the pain and loss get the better of you.

My very good wishes
Neil

New Surgical Treatment Options for Hernias

New Surgical Treatment Options for Hernias

 by: Joseph R. Lopez

Hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. In fact, there are over 600,000 hernia repair surgeries performed each year in the U.S. alone. A hernia is a weakness or defect in the abdominal muscles which can result in the protrusion of tissue through an opening in the outer layers of the abdominal wall. Hernias can develop at any part of the abdominal wall, but generally occur in areas that have a natural tendency to be weak. These areas include the groin (inguinal hernias), umbilicus (umbilical hernias), hiatus (hiatal hernias) and incisions from previous surgeries (incisional or ventral hernias). While hernias generally do not pose serious long-term health problems, they can cause severe pain and discomfort for those suffering from this condition.

Hernias may be present from birth, or can be caused by strain on the abdominal muscles. In either case, hernias do not go away by themselves and depending on the degree of bulging or pain, generally require a surgical procedure to be repaired. Hernia repairs are usually done on an elective basis, which means that the patient and physician decide whether or when the procedure should be performed. Emergency procedures are only done for strangulated hernias, which are hernias that have become pinched to the point that the blood supply is cut off. These hernias require immediate medical attention since they can become infected and lead to a life threatening condition very quickly.

Hernias are typically repaired through a surgical procedure called herniorrhaphy, in which the surgeon repairs the hole in the abdominal wall by sewing surrounding muscle together or by placing a patch called mesh over the defect. Most surgeons make an incision at the site of the hernia in order to gain access to the defect, although some surgeons prefer to do these procedures laparoscopically.

During a laparoscopic hernia repair, the surgeon makes very small incisions to pass through specialized instruments and an endoscope, a device that allows the surgeon to see the abdominal area without opening the patient up. Laparoscopic hernia repair generally results in less postoperative pain and recovery time than open surgery. There is still a great deal of controversy over the long-term benefits of laparoscopic hernia repair, however, and it is by no means an option for every patient.

The use of surgical mesh to repair hernias is gaining in popularity with surgeons. Most meshes currently on the market are made from synthetic materials such as polypropylene, polyester, silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known by the DuPont brand name Teflon. While these meshes have good strength characteristics, they remain in the body as permanent implants and sometimes can cause adverse reactions when the surrounding tissue identifies these materials as foreign bodies.

In order to avoid adverse reactions to synthetic materials, some surgeons prefer to use meshes made of biomaterials which are gradually resorbed by the body over time and are then eliminated through biological processes. Since these meshes are not permanent implants, they generally only offer temporary repair of abdominal wall defects and additional surgical procedures are sometimes required to replace the absorbed mesh.

An alternative to synthetic and absorbable mesh is human tissue. There are a handful of companies that are now marketing processed, freeze-dried human dermis for soft tissue repair and augmentation. This material is implanted using the same technique as other meshes and provides for revascularization, cellular ingrowth and remodeling into the patients tissue. While this option generally provides a permanent repair with few adverse reactions, the processing and distribution of human tissue is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as are most other products that are implanted in the human body. In fact, there have been a number of recent cases of serious infections and even deaths resulting from the implantation of human cadaveric tissue during surgical procedures.

New technologies have recently been developed to solve the problems associated with the use of synthetic substances, absorbable materials and human tissue in hernia repair procedures. Scientists in Europe have been conducting research and development into alternatives to these products over the past two decades and have made major breakthroughs in this area over the past several years. New ways of collecting and processing natural materials have led to a series of products that offer the strength of synthetic compounds, the biocompatibility of biomaterials and the regenerative properties of human tissue.

What material can offer all of the benefits of the previously mentioned products without the corresponding disadvantages? Porcine dermal collagen has an architectural structure very close to human tissue, and is therefore readily recognized as friendly by the human body. A leading medical technology company in Europe has developed a patented process by which a sheet of porcine dermis is converted into a safe and effective surgical implant for soft tissue repair and augmentation. The process, which takes several weeks to complete, removes all non collageneous material from the sheet except elastin, and stabilizes the material through a cross-linking process. The result is an acellular, non reconstituted, non allergenic membrane which has excellent strength characteristics, is completely biocompatible and provides a permanent solution for the repair of abdominal wall defects. Since the material itself is a byproduct of the meat packaging industry, it is more readily available than human tissue. In addition, the harvesting and processing of the material is strictly regulated by local government, as well as international directives and quality standards.

This collagen surgical implant has been used in Europe for these types of procedures for several years and there is strong clinical evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the product. In fact, the implant has been approved for sale in the U.S. by the FDA and there have not been any adverse reactions reported after several thousand implantations in Europe. Not only is it safe, since the structure of the collagen is so similar to human tissue, once it is implanted the sheet provides the basis for cellular ingrowth and revascularization. This results in a permanent fix in even the most difficult cases. In addition to the positive clinical outcomes, surgeons like the fact that they do not need to change their surgical technique to use this product. They can use the same exact same steps they would use for synthetic or absorbable surgical mesh in both open and laparoscopic procedures.

Only physicians can properly diagnose and appropriately treat hernias. However, patients have the right to actively participate in decisions that affect their health or quality of life. Information about the various treatment options that are currently available can play an important part in the discussions between patients and their physicians regarding the best surgical treatment option for them.

Home Sellers: Prepare Your Home for Sale in a Cool Market with Fire

Across the country homes are taking longer to sell. If you have a home for sale, you might consider making a few changes to attract buyers in the cooling real estate market. Not only is the market cooling, so will the weather. It may feel hot to you right now, but in a few weeks, the evenings will get chilly.

Home sellers who stage their homes take advantage of advanced sales techniques. One of the most popular home upgrades today is the addition of a backyard firepit or fireplace. There's something magical about sitting around the glow of a fire that makes people feel great. That's one reason many people go camping, for the simple joy of sitting by a crackling campfire.

Prepare for cool weather selling with a backyard fire. Besides a fireplace, you have many options. At the high end of the scale, you could get a propane type of unit that comes in a terra cotta vase-like container. These types of outdoor fireplaces come in a variety of styles and sizes, which look good on any patio. Point out to home buyers that this fire feature has the added advantage of requiring virtually no cleanup, since these fireplaces don't burn any solid matter.

If your home would benefit from the more rustic appeal of a firepit, you have a number of choices, including one that features a copper cauldron. It's like putting your campfire in a large hand-hammered copper pot, measuring about three feet across and two feet deep. Cauldrons are large enough to become the focal point of an otherwise ordinary backyard.

There's also a propane version of that type of firepit available with molded logs that appear to be burning. This fire enhancement also features the same easy cleanup as the propane-powered terra cotta unit, since no solid material actually burns.

There are a number of firepit rings available that can be customized any way you want, depending only upon your imagination and budget. Generally, a custom firepit should be about 18 inches tall, to prevent sparks from escaping -- and possibly ending up in your buyer's lap. A diameter of 30 inches offers plenty of room for a nice-sized fire. Stone or concrete blocks are generally used to surround the firepit, though you could dress up the pit by using a more decorative stone, such as slate.

Before you build a custom firepit, check codes with your building department or local fire department. In our area, it's easy to get a free permit.

Enchant your home buyers with an outdoor fire. Find a fire feature to suit your home style and take advantage of this growing trend among landscape designers. Entice your buyers with a fire and invite them to stay longer connecting to your home. Light your fire, a few candles or torches, and serve warm drinks. Turn your backyard into a buyer's dream with fire.

Child Injury Prevention

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a majority of stroller accidents are caused by tipping. Whether caused by standing children, or unbalanced loads, the result is usually an abrasion or laceration.

However, a much more serious accident that doubles in number each year is one involving a motor vehicle and a stroller. Every year, hundreds of children are seriously injured or killed by otherwise cautious drivers that simply do not see a child stroller in a crosswalk or a parking lot.

Picture this real-life scenario:
You're waiting at the cross walk with your baby in a stroller, trying to peek over the car parked on the side of the road to see if it's clear so that you and your baby can cross safely.

It looks all clear. You push your stroller in front of you, and as the stroller is emerging from behind the parked car, suddenly another car or a truck comes speeding down the street or around the corner.

The driver does not see the stroller because it's below his eye level, the driver does not see you because you are blocked by the parked car, the driver has no idea that your stroller and your baby are in his path.

After a near miss of his own, Brett Cohen of New York, a father of three, felt compelled to find a solution.

With the go ahead from his wife, he started development on the Stroller Safety Flag. During the development process, Mr. Cohen continued hearing stories of tragedies from all over the U.S., and with news of each tragedy, he poured more time and resources into his invention.

The purpose of the Stroller Safety Flag is to slightly lead the stroller so the flag is seen before the stroller emerges. It mounts quickly, easily, and securely on all models of strollers through the use of a patent pending universal device. It can even be mounted horizontally to jogging strollers to prevent cars from getting to close.

Indoors, the flag can be instantly shortened to half its height.
The Stroller Safety Flag is also useful for ride-on toys, bicycles, and wheelchairs.

Calcium The Key To Quick Weight Loss

Calcium - The Key To Quick Weight Loss

 by: Priya F Shah

Are you dieting your way to bone loss?

Are you aware that the diet you follow may be depleting your bones of essential nutrients and increasing your chances of developing osteoporosis? Popular diets may promise quick weight loss, but calcium and other important nutrients are often missing from the menu, which can lead to bone loss.

And women who consistently limit what they eat to avoid gaining weight may undermine the health of their bones, according to a study by ARS researchers in California. (1)

The study looked at the eating behavior of women between the ages of 18 and 50 and found that those classified as estrained eaters had significantly lower bone mineral density and bone mineral content (key indicators of overall bone strength and health) than women who said they weren't concerned about what they ate.

Exercise and eating a well-balanced diet with adequate calcium, are two of the best ways to keep your bones strong and healthy. advise the researchers.

Calcium is not only good for your bones but can help you maintain a healthy, low fat diet too. There has been increasing media coverage about numerous studies showing that a diet rich in calcium helps reduce body fat.

Why is calcium important in weight loss?

Calcium is a fat burner. High-calcium diets seem to favor burning rather than storing fat. Researchers say this is because calcium stored in fat cells plays an important role in fat storage and breakdown.

Calcium changes the efficiency of weight loss . In fact, study after study has shown that the people with the highest calcium intake overall weighed the least, and the people with the lowest calcium intake had the highest percentage of body fat. (2,3,4)

When overall calorie consumption is accounted for, calcium not only helps keep weight in check, but can be associated specifically with decreases in body fat. A low daily calcium intake is associated with greater tendency to gain weight, particularly in women. (5)

Researchers found that adolescent girls who consumed more calcium weighed less and had less body fat than girls who consumed the same amount of calories from other sources. (6)

Previous studies have shown that a higher calcium intake can block body fat production in adults and preschool children (7), but this was one of the first studies to show that it might have the same effect in body-conscious preteen and teenage girls.

But aren't dairy products fattening?

Some dieters consider dairy products to be fattening, but the evidence suggests the opposite is true.

Consumption of calcium-rich dairy foods can actually help to reduce and prevent obesity. Over 20 recent studies show that milk products actually contribute to weight loss.

A new study in obese adults, presented at the First Annual Nutrition Week Conference, showed that increasing calcium intake by the equivalent of two dairy servings per day could reduce the risk of obesity by as much as 70 percent. (8)

The study provided clinching evidence that calcium in low-fat dairy products can help adjust your body's fat-burning machinery and help keep your weight under control.

In another study, obese subjects placed on a high-calcium diet, with yogurt as the calcium source, showed markedly greater fat loss than those on a low-calcium diet. (9)

Numerous studies have shown that dairy calcium is more effective in reducing body fat than other forms of calcium. (10)

Why does diary calcium work so well?

Researchers believe that other nutrients found in milk products act in synergy with calcium to reduce fat more efficiently.

Glycomacropeptides (found in whey proteins derived from milk) in particular, are known to create feelings of satiety and fullness and decrease food intake. (11,12,13)

Foods that are a good source of calcium include cheese, milk, ice cream, baked beans and other dried legumes, dried figs, broccoli, most dark-green leafy vegetables, and soft fish bones like those in canned salmon.

Steel buildings and metal framed buildings have become the preferred construction types for today?s commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural markets. Even home building is a growing market for steel or metal frame construction. And it?s no wonder!

Steel offers a large number of benefits to today?s building consumer. From economic (for some, the most important single factor) to functional versatility and flexiblilty, environmental, safety and even health factors, steel buildings provide purchasers with a comfort level that other construction methods can not match.

Below are 20 of the many benefits of steel and metal components in your new building:

1.Steel building components are manufactured to consistent quality and exacting tolerances.

2.Steel is manufactured to precise and uniform shapes.

3.There is no need for ?culling? or inspecting steel components for crown or twists.

4.Metal studs start out straight and stay straight without the warping, bowing, twisting, splitting, shrinking and popping knots.

5.Steel building components do not rot like wood construction can.

6.Steel is impermeable to termites, insects and rodents.

7.Steel does not promote mould and mildew.

8.Steel has one of the highest strength to weight ratios of all building materials.

9.Higher strength means that on-center distances can be wider in steel buildings reducing the amount of material and labor required ? thus reducing costs.

10.Steel and metal framing can reach greater spans than other materials creating larger open spaces.

11.Steel strength allows for taller walls.

12.Metal and steel frames are lighter than traditional concrete and masonry leading to reduced footing and foundation requirements.

13.Steel and metal building components can be as much as 50% lighter than wood.

14.Steel can work well on its own or in combination with other materials.

15.Steel is non-combustible and will not add fuel to a fire.

16.In many cases your insurance premiums will be lower because of this.

17.Steel framing connections are much stronger than wood connections.

18.Steel can be engineered to meet the heavy seismic and wind loads required by building codes.

19.A steel or metal framed building produces much less waste than wood. An average wood framed home generates about 50 cubic feet of waste in the landfills compared to about 1.5 cubic feet for steel or metal.

20.Steel is 100% recyclable. 60 million tons of scrap steel are recycled every year which is more than paper, aluminum, glass and plastic combined.

San Diego Real Estate Bubble Not Yet Ready to Burst

Michael Youngblood is a veteran analyst and the managing director of asset-backed securities research for Friedman Billings Ramsey & Co. in Arlington, Virginia. According to an interview he gave to BusinessWeek for its May 15th issue, the idea of a national bubble for residential real estate is fictitious. Since there is no national residential real estate market, there can be no national housing price bubble.

There are, however, residential real estate bubbles in 75 housing markets that he studies. Most exist either on the East or West Coast. San Diego residential real estate market is one of them. In a study he conducted in 2002, San Diego was one bubble city of several for which Youngblood was concerned, along with several other cities within the state of California and elsewhere. However, recent research has proven that the residential real estate markets within these California cities are more optimistic than previously projected and currently debated.

Youngblood assesses prices for the residential real estate markets in 379 metropolitan statistical areas, including San Diego. Most residential real estate forecasters use reactive indicators to predict future market changes, such as inventory-to-sales ratios and number of months required to sell residential real estate. Youngblood believes such indicators do not predict market changes; they only react to market changes. He created his own economic model, based on two predictive indicators that actually drive the residential real estate market. They are growth in employment and growth in personal income, both of which affect a buyer?s ability, desire and willingness to purchase a home and at what price. His findings are much more optimistic than other forecasters and show a much stronger residential real estate market than most other analysts suspect.

Youngblood predicts the greatest declines for the residential real estate market in states other than California. He sees both Bakersfield and Stockton showing the greatest gains in the state at 43 and 39 percent, respectively. The state of Florida also should expect substantial gains.

Though many forecasters believe that residential real estate prices are over-inflated in both California and Florida, these markets are driven by speculation that ignores underlying fundamental factors. Based on historical data, bubbles exist when median existing home prices are 6.8 times greater than the per capita personal income of a particular housing market.

According to Youngblood, bubbles may persist over long periods of time, as long as local economies are good. With a downturn in the local economy, there is typically a one-year lag before the downturn affects the residential real estate market. Even then, the market declines over a long period of time.

Given the gains Youngblood predicts in California, there should be no significant fall during 2006 for San Diego real estate prices. People should not necessarily fear buying or investing in this bubble market, though cautious and informed spending is always the smart path.

What do Houses and Dogs Have in Common?

You might say their owners love them, but since this article is about advertising, that's not the answer.

The truth is, both houses that need new owners and dogs who need new homes share the boring ad syndrome.

Think about it. Most house ads don't tell you a thing that creates desire or excitement to see the house. Dog adoption ads are the same.

    House ad: 3 br, 2 ba, 5 A. family room, deck, 1800 s.f.

Dog ad: 6 mo. Shep X male.

Both ads are supposed to make readers pick up the phone and ask for more information. But what is there about those ads to even provoke curiosity? Not much.

If you're advertising on the internet or in a flyer you produce, there's no excuse for this brevity. You have the opportunity to paint as many word pictures as there are features to describe.

Your house ad can begin with something enticing such as River rock fireplace dominates the family room... and then go on to describe the cathedral ceilings, plush carpeting, redwood decks, etc. in terms that paint pictures in your reader's minds.

Your dog ad can do the same. How about: Buster loves to cuddle cats and chase frisbees! Only 6 months old, he already knows sit and come and is housebroken. Then go on with his other fine features. You can even pull some heart-strings by telling how he came to be up for adoption.

But what if you must advertise in the classifieds and thus have very little space?

Describe the most desirable feature and let potential buyers call to learn about the vital statistics. Perhaps it's the fireplace, or the many windows that bring the outdoors in. Maybe it's a huge deck overlooking the river. It could be a luxurious master suite. Whatever it is, stress it. And don't worry if that feature won't appeal to everyone. You only need one buyer!

In the case of our fictional dog, describe his best personality trait. Let people picture themselves enjoying that dog.

Houses and dogs aren't the only items for sale that suffer from boring ads. And now that I've mentioned it, I'll bet you'll see plenty of them every time you pick up a newspaper.

Make sure the ads YOU write don't suffer from the same affliction. Next time you write an ad - for a car, a couch, a cat, or a kid's snowsuit - start by painting a mental picture that makes people want to know more.

Download iPAQ Games And Freeware Today

I remember the days when we had those small electronic mobile games we used to carry around and enjoyed them every free minute we had. Today, things are much different, and we have IPAQ games and freeware to mess around with. These are nothing like the primitive games we used to have.

IPAQ games and freeware are designed to make your ipaq even more useful and fun. The growing popularity of handheld pc's among travelers, students and everyday consumers means that more and more software companies and individuals are writing all kinds of shareware for these devices. Ipaq games and freeware are widely available on the internet. A quick internet search will probably reveal hundreds of shareware products available for download.

One of the best parts of using ipaq games and freeware is the fun you can have while traveling. Instead of just sitting around twiddling your thumbs waiting for your plane to arrive, you could be playing some great interactive games and having lots of fun. Another good place for your PDA gaming to kick in is during bus and train rides. These boring sessions can turn into hours of fun. Games were one of the first types of application designed for the iPAQ, and there are a great many games available that are tailored to the screens and navigation buttons of the iPAQ.

Here are some examples of great iPAQ games and freeware you can get for free around the Internet and download to your computer:

1.If you're a '70 freak like me, you can get iPAQ versions for space invaders, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Pinball etc. These ones bring back memories!
2.Another great idea is to get freeware that will teach you something new, and use it while you are on the bus, train or plane. For example, why not learn a second or third language? There is so much freeware that will teach you just about any language you choose to learn.
3.Interactive games of all sorts exist to be downloaded to your iPAQ. Many of them are iPAQ versions of the PC game, so you may already know the game.

Of course before you download any software of shareware, whether to your desktop pc, laptop pc or ipaq, it is important that your operating system software be up to date and that a virus scanning program is being run. The unfortunate downside of the iPAQ's popularity is that virus writers are targeting handheld devices as well. That innocent looking game could be harboring a virus or Trojan horse, but a good virus scanning package will quickly detect and neutralize it. This problem is of course of less concern when it comes to PDA's, but it's important to keep up to date in that area, too. Keeping the operating system up to date will ensure that any safety vulnerabilities have been patched before they could be exploited.

Cold Calling Does It Work? Get The FREE EBOOK About Search Engine Placement

I think most people hate making cold calls. Well, if your dead set on doing it, here are some tips.
Help the other person, that's what its all about. You don't want to create an uncomfortable situation with another person. When we're only focused on making the sale, this is not a natural meeting place for both people. We want the sale, but the other person usually wants us to go away. Being intrusive is not the finest of character traits, and on some level we know it. Can we feel good about cold calling? Look at cold calling as an opportunity to assist someone. Just look at it that way, your helping someone, what's wrong with that? Look at cold calling as an adventure.
Tell the truth, be positive, be confident, you will make your prospect much more comfortable. When you approach a potential client with integrity and common sense, you're more personable and less tense. Being fully honest is one of your better attributes. And it gives you an opportunity to enjoy the interaction rather than being artificial or deceiving. People do seem to have a sixth sense about integrity. When they feel you can be trusted, you can truly shine as a person as well as a potential supplier. Engage people in natural conversation. The more natural you are, the more comfortable you will feel. This makes the other person feel more comfortable as well.
Avoid playing games, especially reading from a script. Most people can tell when you're using a script. There's nothing personal about it, and they pick up on that. Being artificial puts you in the ypical salesperson category, which is exactly the role most of us detest. It doesn't feel authentic. And unless you're a born actor, it makes you feel skittish about cold calling. Allow the conversation be relaxed. Let it be the kind of conversation you would have with a family member. Practice makes perfect, right? And you may actually become friends with that new person the next time you pick up the phone. Shift your thinking away from what you want and focus instead on what their wants are.
So many of us have been trained think about our services and products, that we don't think about the client's point of view. We aren't really interested in their issues and how we can help solve them. Be interested in their world and their challenges. You'll find this intriguing. Most of us have a natural flair for problem solving. We enjoy fixing things. So find out what's going on with the person you're talking to. Make sure the solution is a true solution. Get rid of any hidden agendas and truly listen. Let them know you're interested in them and their world. Move outside your own sales agenda to focus on the needs of others.
This makes you a better human being and helps you leap past the fear of cold calling. Never assume anything beforehand. Allow the conversation to be one of exploration and discovery. Stay focused on the dialogue instead of any private agenda. All this advice is sound, but maybe your time could be better spent, by rising to the top of the search engines! How do we do that?

    Consumer Reports Car Seats

A child car seat should be high on your to-buy list. You'll need one to bring your baby home from the hospital and for every car trip thereafter. In fact, hospitals and birthing centers generally won't let you leave by car with your newborn if you don't have one. Every state requires that kids up to 4 years of age ride in a car seat; many require booster seats for older children.

    WHAT'S AVAILABLE

The major brands of car seats you're likely to encounter are, in alphabetical order: Baby Trend, Britax, Chicco, Combi, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Peg Perego, and Safety 1st.

There are also car beds for preemies and other very small newborns if there's a concern that a car seat may not provide a secure fit or that it may exacerbate breathing problems. In addition, there are specially designed car seats for children with physical disabilities. Every model of car seat sold in the U.S. must meet federal safety standards. These are your basic choices:

Infant seats. These rear-facing seats are for babies up to 22 pounds. They allow infants to recline at an angle that doesn't interfere with breathing and protects them best in a crash. Many strollers are now designed to accommodate infant car seats. All infant car-seat models come with a handle, and nearly all have a base that secures to your vehicle with LATCH connections or a vehicle safety belt, a convenience that lets you remove the seat and use it as a carrier. You can strap most infant seats into a car without a base, using the vehicle safety belts, but most people don't use them that way.

Infant seats have either a three-point harness--two adjustable shoulder straps and a lock between the child's legs or--even better--an adjustable five-point system--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap. The handle usually swings from a position behind the seat's shell when in the car to an upright position for carrying. Remember to swing the handle to the vehicle position before each trip. Slots underneath most seats help them attach to the frame of a shopping cart.

With an infant car seat, you also can move your baby from car to house or vice versa without waking him or her up--a plus for both of you. Note also that extra bases are available so you can keep a secured base in each of your vehicles. Your baby may outgrow an infant car seat quickly and become too heavy for you to use it as a carrier. As a result, you may find yourself having to buy a convertible car seat after your baby is 6 to 9 months old. However, our advice is still to start with an infant seat before moving up to a convertible seat.

    Price range: $30 to $180.

Travel systems. Travel systems offer one-stop shopping: You get an infant car seat and a stroller all in one. Most car-seat manufacturers offer these combination strollers/infant car seats. And many stand-alone strollers are now designed to accommodate infant car seats. With these strollers, you create a carriage by snapping an infant car seat into a stroller. The car seats of travel systems also come with a base, which stays in the car. The snap-on car seat is generally positioned atop the strollers so the infant rides facing the person pushing. Your baby can also ride in the stroller seat alone when he or she is big enough.

Most travel-system strollers can be used only with a car seat from the same company. They can also be bulky, so if you're a city dweller who negotiates more subway stairs than highways or if the trunk of your car isn't too roomy, you may be better off with a separate car seat and a compact stroller that is appropriate for a newborn.

Price range: $40 (stroller frame only) to $400.

Convertible seats. With a convertible seat, the child faces rearward as an infant, then toward the front of the vehicle as a toddler. The seat can function as a rear-facing seat for infants up to 30 or 35 pounds, depending on the model, and as a front-facing seat for toddlers generally up to 40 pounds (a few have a 65-pound limit). Models typically have an adjustable five-point harness system--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap between the legs. Some models have a tray shield that lowers over the baby's head and fastens with a buckle between the legs. However, our tests show that children, especially small ones, are better restrained with a five-point harness.

A convertible car seat can be a money saver, taking your child from infancy to kindergarten and beyond. We advise starting with an infant seat first, though, as mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that convertible seats are not compatible with strollers, so you will have to transfer your baby from the convertible car seat to a carriage or stroller when you're ready to set out on foot. Such jostling can wake a sleeping baby, a problem if you need to take your child on frequent shopping expeditions or other errands.

    Price range: $50 to $290.

Toddler/booster seats. Looking like large versions of convertible seats, these front-facing seats are used with an internal harness for toddlers 20 to 40 pounds. They're either LATCH-attached or can be secured using the vehicle belts and tethers. When kids reach 40 pounds, the seat becomes a belt-positioned booster seat, which children can use until they're 80 or 100 pounds. With a belt-positioned booster seat, the child is restrained using the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system.

Booster seats. These are generally for children weighing 40 to 80 pounds. (A very tall child may begin using a booster seat at 30 pounds.) Booster seats use the vehicle's own safety belts to restrain the child.

Built-in seats. Some U.S. and foreign automakers offer on select cars and minivans an integrated, forward-facing child seat that has a harness and accommodates toddlers weighing more than 20 pounds. There are also some booster-seat versions. Built-in seats must meet the same performance standards as add-on child seats. However, they offer little or no side protection and they're usually located next to a door, instead of in the center--the safer position. You may also need a regular car seat for when your child travels in other vehicles.

    IMPORTANT FEATURES

Since Sept.1, 2002, all child car seats with an internal harness and nearly all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. have been required to include equipment designed for simpler buckling. This system, called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), consists of child car-seat connections that attach to anchor points in the vehicle, eliminating the need to use a vehicle's safety belts to install the seat. You can still use safety belts to install a LATCH-equipped child car seat--for example, in an older car that lacks LATCH anchors. You can also retrofit some non-LATCH car seats with LATCH features.

Today's car seats cater to every possible taste--plain colors, plaids, animal and paw-print motifs, and patriotic red, white, and blue. Remember that, style aside, babies tend to be messy, so washable fabric is a plus, especially if your car seat will be with you beyond the first year, when training cups and eating on the go can kick into high gear. Car seats from some leading brands, however, require hand washing and line drying. Make sure you're up for that; most coverings are rigged through the harness-strap system and are held in place with elastic so they can be removed for laundering. But in some cases extracting the fabric from the seat can require extensive dismantling. Check the seat's manual for how-to's.

Extras such as add-on seat covers (oots), thicker padding, additional reclining options, or adjustable head-support cushions may offer greater comfort. But buy them only if they are sold by the same maker as the seat and for that specific seat, since they were tested that way; mixing brands is very risky. Some models have elastic side pockets for toys, bottles, or snacks. As your baby grows, they can come in handy, but they're not absolutely necessary.

Some infant and convertible seats have a level indicator on the side to help you install them facing the rear at a safe angle. A top tether is a webbed strap that can be used with all front-facing seats for children up to 40 pounds and with some up to 65 pounds. It's located on the back of a convertible or toddler seat and hooks into an eye bolt in a vehicle's rear deck, floor, roof, or seatback. Passenger vehicles manufactured on or after Sept.1,1999 have the anchors in place in their rear seats, but older models may need to have the hardware added. Obviously, you can't use a tether with cars that lack a top-tether anchor or that have no provision for a retrofit.

    HOW TO CHOOSE

Start with an infant seat for a newborn and pay close attention to the height and weight limits as your child grows. When your baby reaches the infant seat's limits for height and weight, or becomes too heavy for you to tote, use a convertible seat in the rear-facing orientation up to the seat's limits in that mode. Then use the convertible seat front-facing until your toddler reaches the next height and weight limits. After that, use a booster seat until your child is tall enough to use the car's safety belts, typically at least 57 inches. Buying three seats instead of two may cost more, but it can pay off in protection and peace of mind

Make sure the seat is compatible with your car. One of the first things you should do in choosing a seat for your child is to check the fit of any models you're considering in your own car. Even before that, though, we suggest placing similar-looking models side by side in the store to compare features. (If you've already had your baby, place your child in the seat, to get a sense of the ease of buckling and unbuckling.) Then, if possible, bring the floor model to your car for a mock installation. Be aware that some vehicle seats are too short, indented, or excessively sloped to allow a good fit of a child car seats.

If you're considering a convertible car seat, try the floor model in both the rear- and front-facing positions. Check out the harness release button in the rear-facing position; in some models it may be too low to reach comfortably. If you're thinking about an infant car-seat/stroller combination, also known as a travel system, check to be sure that it fits in your trunk or vehicle cargo area. If the store won't let you take the seat out to your car to try it, make sure you can return any car seat you buy--or go to another store.

Insist on new. Although there are many baby items you can borrow or buy secondhand, don't make a car seat one of them if you can avoid it. A used seat may have been in a crash or recalled. The manufacturer's instructions may be missing. If, for some reason, you must use a secondhand seat, avoid those with an unknown history or that are older than six years. In the world of car seats, a six-year-old model is a relic--and risky. You'll also want to avoid recalled models.

Send in the registration card. You should be notified by the manufacturer if the car seat is recalled. To play it extra safe, you can also sign up for the Consumer Product Safety Commission's e-mail subscription list at www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp. Updated recall information will be sent directly to your e-mail in-box. Or check monthly issues of Consumer Reports or visit www.ConsumerReports.org. Other sources of information on car-seat recalls include NHTSA's Web site (www.nhtsa.gov) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission site, www.recalls.gov.

Check the store's return policy. If you're not happy with a particular car seat for whatever reason, it's important to know that you can return it and try again with another model. Be aware that a badly soiled or damaged seat may not be exchanged.

Toys That Last For Generations: Yes They're Still Being Made!

Today's offerings of plasticized bins and furniture aren't ones that you'll likely want to save to pass down through generations. Most of them are cheaply made and break or crack, and others fade from the sun or parts go missing, thanks to low-cost home-assembly kits. Nothing seems to be anything of long-lasting value or charm, and there isn't much that looks like it might become something your son or daughter would treasure as years pass on.

There are still keepsakes that your child may enjoy now and that will become memorabilia to store away. It's wonderful to pull out a small chair or a rocking horse that you can hand down to a new youngster when your son or daughter has children. Carefully crafted classic toys or small items of furniture make wonderful gifts for grandchildren. If your adult child decides to not have children, your son or daughter might still be touched and appreciate that you set aside a beloved item they can set on display in their homes.

Wooden toys offer long-lasting durability that withstands the banging, throwing, and chewing most toddlers will put their toys through. Most wooden toys today are carefully handcrafted for strength, as they have a reputation of being a classic favorite to maintain. Trains and trucks will provide hours of imaginative fun for boys, and when your son is grown, the vehicles can be easily integrated into a bachelor's d?cor or given to your grandson.

Young girls enjoy the creative hours they spend rearranging dollhouses, and choosing one that is beautiful yet functional is a wise decision. Dollhouses, just like wooden toys, can turn into treasures on proud display in an adult home. Not only that, dollhouses are involved in the hobby of miniature collectibles, and many adults continue their charming childhood pastime well into their senior years.

Furniture makes for wonderful items to pass down over the years. Cribs used to be treasured items to hold new babies, but with safety recommendations often changing, parents are looking for other objects that will be loved for generations. A small wooden chair or chair-and-table set can be just the thing for lasting memories. Their durability and small size are perfect for passing on to other children you care for.

Those who enjoy antiques might appreciate the nostalgic idea of the beginning of something very special. A wooden toy box, painted with a special design, may look just right in a toddler's room, and the toy box will last until the child is grown with a son of his own. A whimsical chair decorated with a flower on the seat, might be charming tucked in a corner of either a little girl's room or a grown woman's sun porch. It's heartwarming to wonder how many offspring will love child-sized furniture thanks to your thoughtful gift.

Well-crafted toys and scaled down furniture solidly built will last forever. These items will have a special place in both your heart, as well as someone else's. Taking the time to choose items for children that will hold sentimental value later on in life and that are beautiful enough to be put on display in a home isn't just an idea ? it's a thought that comes straight from the heart.

Vermont Mortgage What to Expect When Buying a Home in Vermont

Maybe you?re buying your first home in Vermont, or perhaps you?re relocating to Vermont from another state. Either way, it?s important that you educate yourself on Vermont home loans before shopping for a home and mortgage. This article explains what you?ll need to know before buying a home in Vermont:

The median price of a home in Vermont is $111,500. Recently, homes in Vermont have been appreciating at rates above the national average. As a result, income levels in many parts of Vermont are too low to purchase a median-priced home with a conventional loan. In fact, homeowners in many Vermont cities pay more than the recommended 30% of their incomes toward housing.

The price of homes in Vermont varies widely between zip codes. For example, in Burlington, Vermont, the median price of a home in the summer of 2005 was $338,000; however, in Montpelier, Vermont, the median price of a home was $294,000, and in Rutland, Vermont, it was $288,000. Average interest rates in Vermont are below the national average, and job growth rates are comparable to the national average.

Vermont state law prohibits the issuance of home equity lines of credit. Additionally, it requires that a defective mortgage be treated as though it had never been recorded.

Each year the Vermont Housing Finance Agency hosts a Home Buyer Fair where potential homeowners can meet and talk to mortgage lenders, realtors, attorneys, home energy specialists, among others. The Home Buyer Fair offers homebuyer education workshops, credit and budget counseling, post-purchase counseling, and post-purchase workshops.

Vermont?s Housing Finance Agency provides low interest financing to homeowners who meet certain income and purchase price limits. Information on these programs is also available at the Home Buyer Fair.

    Infant Car Seat Safety

A few facts about car accidents:

-Did you know that car accidents kill and injure more children
than all major childhood illnesses combined?

-Most accidents occur within a 25 mile radius of your home.

-a crash at 30 miles an hour can create as much force as falling
    from a third story window.

Now if that doesn't get your attention I don't know what will.
So here are some safety tips to remember on that first ride home
from the hospital as well as through out toddler hood:

    - Always follow manufactures directions for both the
installation and the securing of the child. Always cheek before
each ride if the seat is properly secured and always retighten
the seat belt that holds your baby in the actual car seat. Use
locking clips that are available in most of the newer models of
cars, if you don't have these you need to make sure the shoulder
    or lap belt stays tight.

-Getting your baby used to riding in a car seat will make later
use of the seat easier and more accepting almost like a routine
when they get in the car. It is what's expected.

-Infants should ride in the middle of the back seat. This is the
    safest part in any car.

    - Don't place child seat at either side of the car. This is the
most vulnerable place for side impact car crashes. If you have
to place child here it is best to have them rear facing.

-Never put a child under 10 in the front seat with an air bag.
An air bag can crush or suffocate a young child.

-Infants should ride in a rear facing car seat until they weigh
20 pounds, and can sit up well. Over 20 pounds or a year and
close to 20 pounds the child can face forward.

-Over 30 pounds, they can ride in a booster seat or a toddler
seat designed to hold a larger child.

    - For older babies use toys that are made for the car seat, that
are attached so baby can not throw, or drop toys. This
distracts the driver as well as upsets baby.

-Make sure that heavy or large objects such as briefcases,
suitcases, laptops, boxes are tied down or on the floor so in
case of an accident or sudden stop these objects don't hit baby.

-For young babies do pad the sides of the car seat and the areas
around the head with a blanket to provide support.

-If baby is small then place a blanket between the baby and the
crotch strap, making the fit of the car seat safer and more
    secure for baby.

Follow these safety tips and those provided by the manufacturer
of the car seat and you can make every ride safe for your baby.

Before You Play Understand The Backgammon Setup

Before You Play Understand The Backgammon SetupSubmitted By: Gene Marshall

Backgammon is becoming increasingly popular on the Internet and there are literally hundreds of thousands of players from around the world that are all joining in on the action. That?s because it?s a game that requires intense player strategy and concentration. Everyone has his or her own style of playing but one thing that is essential before you start is understanding the backgammon setup. Follow these easy backgammon instructions to get going.

The backgammon board game is played the same way online as it is offline. In the standard version of the game you play on a board with 24 points (alternating colored triangles across the face of the board). The board itself has 2 halves ?one side is the inner board ?also called the home board, and the other side is the outer board where players race their men (also called checkers) in order to reach the home board and bear off (meaning to take their men off the board an out of the game). The first to do wins.

Now looking at the backgammon set up, point 1 in your homeboard is the where you want to bring your checkers and point 24 in your opponents homeboard is the furthest away from where you want to go. To make it easier to understand, point 1 should be in the lower right corner of the backgammon board closest to you. Start by putting 2 checkers on point number 24 (furthest from your home board), then 5 checkers on point 13 and then 3 more checkers on point 8 and finally 5 checkers on point 6 (these are already in your home board). In total you should have 15 checkers and so should your opponent.

Now your opponent simply sets up his men in a mirror image of yours ?in other words on the points directly across from where you placed your 15 checkers. To avoid any confusion each player has their own color men ?usually light and dark. Now that you understand the backgammon setup it?s easy to get going. The nice thing about a backgammon game download is everything is set up automatically when you start playing. That?s why so many people are turning to backgammon software as their preferred way to play.

The backgammon download is easy and free. Just install and you can play whenever you want for fun or for real money bets. Free backgammon is a popular way to practice and sharpen your skills. Backgammon takes skills and is not a game of chance. A strong player that has much practice and experience will almost always beat out a weak player. That?s why backgammon strategy is essential when paying. In addition to learn how to play backgammon there are many advanced tips and strategies you can read about online in order to improve your playing abilities and your overall chances of winning. Good luck!

Teaching Outside the Box: Tough Times Require Extraordinary Creativity

(ARA) - Teaching is now competing with testing, leaving less classroom time for hands-on, experienced-based learning. With record debt -- upwards of $200 billion -- and school funding dependent on compliance and performance, programs promoting creative thinking have become unaffordable luxuries.

Its not just P.E. hours and pencil allotments being cut, says Susan Singer, president and founder of Field Trip Factory (FTF), a company which provides free, experiential learning adventures to U.S. schools. Were seeing less active learning in classrooms despite research showing a direct correlation between the learners involvement and learning retention. Studies have demonstrated 40 to 60 percent increases in retention when students have an opportunity to test previously learned facts and theories, revise assumptions, and derive new and first-hand knowledge.

The growing success of Singers company is a testament to the overwhelming demand for creative, affordable ways to reinforce curriculums and engage all kinds of learners. Last year, Field Trip Factory took 200,000 pre-K through 8th grade students out of the classroom -- into the field -- to teach lessons in nutrition, fitness, creative problem-solving, teamwork, eye science, biology, recycling and geography.

Students were able to taste their way up the Food Pyramid, suit up with sports safety gear, plan birthday parties using time and budget allotments, examine the similarities linking living beings, and much more. According to Chicago public school teacher and field trip participant, Mee Soohoo, The interaction between the students and the community professionals on-the-job had a real impact on students learning and behavior. In a survey done following a recent nutrition field trip, student participants reported eating 38 percent healthier and increasing their consumption of nutritious foods by 12 to 18 percent.

This past spring, 600 schools signed-up for FTFs new in-school Creative Break program, which promotes self-expression and creative problem-solving, while supporting cross-curricular instruction. Teachers embraced the Breaks art-based, no wrong answer activities and students eagerly exchanged their number two pencils for colored markers.

Interest in experiential learning has ebbed and flowed since the late 19th century, but is growing by leaps and bounds today. Cost has always been a consideration but now Singer and Field Trip Factory have taken that consideration off the table. Educational psychologists support hands-on learning not only for learners whod be left behind by traditional classroom instruction, but for all students. In an ever-changing, highly competitive global market, children must be readied to apply flexible, creative strategies to practical, real-world problems.

Building a Foundation of Learning ARABuilding a Foundation of Learning
(ARA) - Any parent with school-age children knows that school budgets have been strained to their limits in recent years. State and federal government pledges of no new taxes also mean no new funding for schools. Extra-curricular activities such as band and drama are usually the first casualties, but basic academic programs can be affected, too. Some schools, in an effort to raise money, resort to solutions like installing vending machines selling soda pop, or bringing fast food franchises into the school cafeteria.

Coming up with exciting lesson plans that include hands-on learning elements can be a challenge for teachers under these circumstances. Two programs that have won thumbs up reviews from both teachers and students are Build Up! and On Site!. These two programs help teach math, science, technology and language arts to fifth through ninth grade students, using a fun curriculum based on the buildings around them.

In teams, the kids in my class built bridges and skyscrapers, said Dan Jordan, a fifth-grade teacher at Barton Intermediate School in Queensbury, N.Y. They thoroughly enjoyed this weeklong project. Some of the teams had structures that held over 100 pounds! As an educator, and former businessman, I appreciate whenever companies or groups get involved with helping to educate our children.

Build Up! is geared to fifth grade students, and takes them on a journey of discovery inside the structures that make up their world. In addition to using math skills, students also stretch their imaginations and use their science knowledge as they look ahead and discuss futuristic building challenges, such as mile-high buildings, extra-long bridges and energy efficient buildings.

The Build Up! curriculum was very well received by the students and the activities were highly motivational. It gave them an excellent understanding of the skills required by those in the construction industry, as well as the career opportunities that are available, said Sara Miller, a fifth-grade teacher (ret.) from Washington, D.C., who piloted the program during the 1997 to 98 school year.

The On Site! program is tailored to middle/junior high school students (grades 6 through 9). This multi-media program travels through time and brings students from the early construction in ancient Rome to construction today, where environmental, economic and social impacts are considered as new projects are undertaken.

One of the most popular aspects of On Site! is The Most Astounding Structures video. Developed in conjunction with the History Channel, the video provides a 30-minute overview of the most extreme structures on earth -- the tallest, strangest, largest.

All of the lessons in Build Up! and On Site! are linked to National Standards for social studies, science, math and language arts. Build Up! debuted in January 1999 and has been refined and improved using teacher feedback. This feedback was also used in creating On Site! To date, the two programs have reached over 1 million students.

The construction industry is an honorable profession, says Dennis Day, executive director of public affairs for the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), a Washington, D.C.-based trade group for the construction industry. It is still one of a few industries where you can climb the ladder of success as high as you want. By creating our Build Up! and On Site! curriculum, AGC brings the merits of the profession to students, teachers, and parents allowing them learn how construction contributes to our quality of life.

Build Up! and On Site! are available free to teachers and schools courtesy of AGC. The tool kits for each program are turnkey supplementary education programs that include a teaching guide with lesson plans, student activity books, audio visual components, and consumable materials for hands-on projects such as wooden dowels, washers, Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, floatable concrete mix, etc., which are used in conjunction with the student activities.

AGC members and chapters sponsor kits at a cost of $199 each; after a teacher requests a kit, AGC works to find someone in their area who will sponsor their materials. AGC members are also available as speakers to provide real-world connections to the academic material, sharing their knowledge and experience with students.

Parents Need a Back-to-School Checklist for Educational Technology ARA(ARA) - New clothes that strike a balance between appropriate and cool? Check. New school supplies that include the latest backpack style? Check. New ulcer caused by your teens impending first day of high school? Check mate. You may not be ready for it, but youre pretty sure they are. Youve raised them to appreciate an education, youve taught them everything you know and youve given them all the trappings of the 21st century teen. But have you given them an edge?

Technology has dramatically altered the classroom in the last decade, allowing students to achieve a deeper level of understanding of their schoolwork. The calculator you used, which probably offered a one line screen and had only basic math functionality, is now as antiquated as the abacus. There is a new breed of educational handheld devices more akin to handheld computers. They make the word calculator woefully inadequate to describe what is possible for your teen. This new technology is not a calculator at all, but closer to a portable and personal handheld computer. It leverages software algorithms and micro-technology and offers functions beyond mere mathematical calculation to enrich the learning experience across a spectrum of subjects. It gives a child the edge that the hippest clothes, the coolest school supplies and even a parents best intentions cant provide.

But your VCR still flashes 12:00 a.m. You know as much about the latest technology as you do about the newest boy band. So how do you know youve given your child the best tool to succeed? What should you look for in an educational handheld? There are three elements to consider in the checklist for this back-to-school purchase: educational value, lifecycle and price.

    Educational Value

Perhaps the most important factor in choosing an educational handheld device is the company that makes it. Are they focused on education? Some companies are marketing their business handhelds, or personal digital assistant (PDAs) as educational handhelds. However, these are often not created with the student, or learning, as the priority. The best devices are developed after rigorous research and testing with educators. Teachers should be involved in developing the products as they offer significant input on what capabilities are necessary to heighten the impact of the coursework. Teens are also often asked what they would like to see integrated into the handheld. The devices themselves are even tested in the school environment, having to survive a crunch test in a book bag that simulates the wear and tear the average teen can inflict. The best way to research a company to make sure it meets this educational criterion is by asking your childs teacher or looking on the companys Web site.

Another way to evaluate the educational value of these products is to look at the additional software applications that are offered. These applications extend the capabilities of a handheld device into different subject areas. Some companies, like Texas Instruments, have developed educational apps that are easily downloadable via computer from their Web site. Again, ask your students teacher what applications will be used in class, but also know that many apps can be used as student-driven study aids. They add functionality, flexibility and fun to the learning process, and top-of-the-line devices allow you to choose from an array of subjects.

Obviously, students still need the traditional math and science functions that allow them to explore equations for algebra, plot graphs, determine coefficients and perform the higher arithmetic functions, but many educational devices leave off there. There are, however, devices on the market, like the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, that also enable students to graphically analyze data for biology, offer spreadsheet capabilities, and timelines for history, social studies, and other classes. It can even be used as a personal organizer to keep class schedules and important contact information. Educational handhelds like this can connect with computers for software app downloads as well as operating system upgrades that can further extend its usability through the school years.

Some devices even have capabilities to review electronic flash cards for any subject, including foreign languages. The best devices for learning are allowed for use on standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT, and even required for some state exams. This gives your child a decided edge in the testing environment, as these are often the same tools they use in class.

    Lifecyle

A handhelds lifecycle, or how long its technology is up to date, is another important factor when deciding on an educational device. Always check the applications. Do they cover a variety of educational subjects? Do they actually offer anything new that will help your child succeed? Beware of superficial changes and your childs desire to simply have the coolest looking model, regardless of its value in the classroom.

The second thing to understand is that we live in an age of software. Downloads should be readily available at a companys Web site and should offer a wide range of options that extend the use of the product through multiple subject areas and different educational levels.

    Price

Obviously this lifecycle is an important distinction when pricing handhelds, as is the educational value. This is an investment that you are making for your childs future. A good handheld should take a student through three or four years of learning, with the average device costing between $100 and $150. When one thinks of the school supplies bought every year (remember those designer tennis shoes?), an educational handhelds cost is negligible when spread out over its entire lifecycle.

Make sure youre getting what you paid for. Does the device add value by delivering more apps across a wide spectrum of subjects? Was it developed with input from educators? Will it withstand the pressure between a chemistry and English book? Can they use it for standardized testing? Can the lifecycle be extended through downloads saving you multiple purchases?

As your teen begins his or her high school years, you can be confident that their learning experience will be enriched with the right educational handheld device. It is one more tool and one more edge you can give them as they enter that brave new world. As you look for the right device to fit your needs, you can rest easy in the knowledge that you now know more about educational handhelds than you ever thought you would. Boy bands and the clock on the VCR are still a mystery.

Robots Shoveling Snow? Humanoid Robot Inspires Students to Study Science ARA(ARA) Imagine getting some help decorating your holiday tree or shoveling snow off your driveway from a friendly robot. It could happen sometime in the future.

Honda is asking kids to imagine what it would be like if robots were a part of our daily lives. The ASIMO Essay Contest provides a chance for one school to win an exclusive visit from ASIMO, the worlds most advanced humanoid robot, in March of 2004.

We hope that the ASIMO Essay Contest encourages students across the nation to dream about the future of robotics, said Jeffrey Smith, leader of the ASIMO North American Project. We also hope that it inspires them to learn more about the science and technology involved in humanoid robotics.

Developed by Honda after 17 years of research, ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), can walk forward and backward, turn smoothly without pausing, climb stairs and maintain balance while walking on uneven slopes and surfaces. With its smooth moves, ASIMO can even disco dance with the best of them. This compact robot is about the size of a fourth grader, but it represents big possibilities for the future of robotic technology.

Created to resemble a human shape and operate in human environments, ASIMO has two arms and two hands, necessary to someday work in our world where we need to reach and grasp objects, switch lights on and off and open and close doors. ASIMO also can recognize the faces of a select number of individuals and respond to voice commands and hand signals.

Honda hopes that one day ASIMO may be able to assist elderly, disabled and other people in need with day-to-day activities. In the future, a robot like ASIMO could also possibly perform dangerous duties such as fighting fires and cleaning up hazardous wastes.

To enter the contest, each participating class or group of students will research the science and history of robotics and submit an essay on their school's vision of the role of humanoid robots in our society. The contest is open to all public and private elementary, middle, junior high and high schools in the 48 contiguous United States and the District of Columbia. The winning school will be notified by February 20, 2004.

ASIMO is currently traveling on a North American Educational to motivate students to study sciences such as math, engineering, physics and computer science. Classroom materials for teachers and robotics-related educational resources for parents can be found at www.asimo.honda.com.

For more information about the ASIMO North American Educational Tour and the essay contest, visit www.asimo.honda.com.
